HOW IS A BREAST AUGMENTATION PERFORMED ?
Transgendered men today, do not only feel like women, but also wish to look like them.
A Breast augmentation procedure can be performed in two hours. The anesthesia used can be local anesthesia, IV anesthesia or general anesthesia. Preferably, local anesthesia is used to perform the surgery. Local anesthesia gives an edge over performing the procedure with general anesthesia as it can help in faster and better recovery of the patient, prevent nausea post surgery and eliminate the risk of a pulmonary embolism or a fat embolism.
Most patients choose to undergo the breast surgery using breast implants. In order to perform a breast augmentation using implants, patients are asked to discuss and choose among the following decisions:
- Saline or silicone implants
- Round or oval
- Moderate profile, high profile or extra high profile
- Size of implants
- Surface of implants (textured or smooth)
- Placement of implants ( location of the incision)
- Include or exclude a ‘breast lift’
Over or under the muscle
ARE THERE ANY SIZES AND STYLES AVAILABLE ?
The potential risks and complications of surgery are rare but the most common ones include reactions to anesthesia, blood accumulation that may need to be drained surgically and infection.
When planning to undergo a breast augmentation, there are a lot of details to choose from. This choice is completely dependent on the patient. A person can choose the size of the implants, i.e. how big does the patient want his breasts to get after the surgery.
These choices should be made considering the body type of the patient. The top three implant sizes that patients usually choose from are 350cc, 400cc and 450cc silicone.
The patient can also try on actual implants by inserting them inside the bra to get a rough idea of how their breasts are going to look after surgery. You can place them inside different bra sizes to try during your consult. The most preferred implant size is 400cc. The implant size also depends on the body frame and average metrics of the patient.
You can either choose from a moderate profile, high profile or evtra high profile. Moderate profile should be preferred when the patient has a skinny body structure. High profile implants are used to make the breasts look more prominent or protruding.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SILICONE AND SALINE BREAST IMPLANTS ?
Silicone implants give a much more natural feel as compared to saline implants. Silicone implants are a much more preferred choice over saline implants by most women. Silicone implants are considered to be medically safe and all of the FDA studies have concluded that these do not cause any disease.
Saline implants are also not much preferred because they do not feel like a water sac inside the body as it is surrounded by various amounts of skin, fat and muscle. When folds in the implant shell are visible through skin, it is known as rippling. Silicone implants have much less tendency to show rippling.
Saline implants however require only as small incision as compared to a silicone implant. The saline implant is inserted into the breast in full gel form. They are inserted empty and then filled with saline after placing it into the breast cavity
